We examined the overall relationship between hair testosterone and cortisol levels in 54 females and 33 males, sampled over multiple years using a random effect mixed model. These two studies suggest that cues to an opponent’s status may be critical moderators of the testosterone × cortisol interaction and may explain some of the heterogeneity in previous dual-hormone findings. This argument suggests that elevated testosterone should be related to increased status-seeking behavior against high-status opponents, but only when cortisol levels are low; in a reversal of this pattern, elevated testosterone should be related to increased status-seeking behavior against lower-status opponents when cortisol levels are high. In contrast, the pairing of high concern for status (high testosterone) with high stress (high cortisol) may be related to enhanced social threat, resulting in avoiding higher-status opponents and engaging in competitive behavior with lower-status opponents instead. High concern for status (high testosterone) and low stress (low cortisol) may specifically direct behaviors targeted towards challenging higher-status opponents as a means to rise in the hierarchy. David John Farmer writes critically of the leader principle and of the cult in which elements throughout society – even in democratic countries – pay deference to the idea of leadership. While the conventional view of leadership may satisfy people who "want to be told what to do", these critics say that one should question subjection to a will or intellect other than one's own if the leader is not a subject-matter expert. Noam Chomskyand others have subjected the concept of leadership to critical thinking and assert that people abrogate their responsibility to think and will actions for themselves. Some examples of action-oriented leadership include extinguishing a rural fire, locating a missing person, leading a team on an outdoor expedition, or rescuing a person from a potentially hazardous environment. One approach to team leadership examines action-oriented environments, where effective functional leadership is required to achieve critical or reactive tasks by small teams deployed into the field. We have recently defined the first animal to arrive as the leader, as this individual influences the movement of others, and therefore we classify hyrax leadership as a behavior that involves risk17. The dual-hormone hypothesis (DHH) was developed to explain the inconsistences in research on testosterone and human social behavior5,6. Evolutionary theories imply that risk-taking may have evolved as a behavioral strategy for social status achievement, and that individuals who have much to lose should be more risk-averse than individuals who have little to lose3. We used proximity loggers, observations, and playback trials to characterize hyrax leaders in three different leadership contexts that varied in their risk levels. While many of life’s stressors, like a crumbling stock market, death of a loved one or a natural disaster, are beyond our control, we can work on ways to manage stress, through exercise, meditation and taking breaks from work. It turned out that the more responsibility a leader had, the less accurate he or she was in identifying the emotional states of others. The results of the graduate student study appeared compelling, says Sherman, but the subjects were students, not executives. In the second study, researchers told students they were competing to solve a series of puzzles, and they asked the students to choose whether to continue the competition or to fill out a questionnaire about their favorite kinds of food and entertainment. The cortisol and testosterone interactions were prominent in both low- and high-risk scenarios (i.e., low-risk coordinated movement and morning emergence sequences and high-risk predator defense events).
