Correlational testing revealed that day-to-day changes in cortisol and testosterone concentrations tended to rise and fall together, but only in men at T1. Over the course of a swimming season (up to 25 weeks), however, an excessive accumulation of training-induced fatigue might promote greater general stress and emotional exhaustion, even after a tapering period . It is not clear why the female swimmers showed greater stress sensitivity, given that TL exposure at T1, T2, and T3 was almost identical among men and women. Another important difference lies in the use of a strong standardized stressor (i.e., 15 × 200 m freestyle efforts with 20-s rest periods) rather than a typical swim-training session, as per this study. No significant hormone-psychological relationships transpired, as per our second hypothesis, but some linkages (within each component) were seen in male swimmers at different time points. Pre-treatment swimming or post-treatment swimming, separately, induced a significant increase in the level of testosterone compared to the non-trained ISO group. Then, total testosterone levels were measured with the Immulite 2000XPi (Siemens, Munich, Germany) chemiluminescent immunoassay and expressed as ng/dL. Our findings can serve as the first evidence that swimming exercise confers sustained protection from ISO-induced adverse effects on inflammatory parameters in the male reproductive system. Moderate exercise training decreases the risks of cardiovascular disorders and contributes to the prevention of non-communicable chronic diseases . Moderate-intensity swimming exercise effectively alleviated the negative effects of high oxidative stress. Serum testosterone levels, sperms’ hyaluronan binding, and GSH content were found to be significantly reduced, while MPO, TNF alpha and IL6 concentrations in the testis and semen were elevated after the ISO treatment compared to the CTRL group. A 2007 study suggests that brief exposure to cold temperature actually decreases testosterone levels in your blood. The authors wish to thank the athletes and coaches for their commitment to this study. In conclusion, a cohort of highly-trained swimmers experienced little or no adaptive changes in the lead up to a major competition. Unfortunately, we were unable to control for menstrual-cycle timing in our study design. More detailed (up to 76 items) stress-recovery-motivational inventories have been used in literature 2, 7, 10, but time constraints in a real-world setting necessitated an abbreviated questionnaire. There are many more exercises asides from weightlifting that causes a rise in testosterone level but be careful not to engage in high endurance exercises like cycling. Although cycling and running tend to cause low testosterone levels, cycling decreases testosterone levels the most. Running has the same effect on testosterone levels as cycling, but it doesn’t produce the same intense effect. The research concluded that swimming enhances mating behavior which interprets a rise in the testosterone level. Teen boys experience rapid growth and development due to the rise in their testosterone level during puberty, but as they get older, testosterone levels decrease. Using a commercial protein assay kit (Bio-Rad Labs, Hercules, CA, USA), aliquots (20 μL) of the diluted testicular and semen samples were mixed with 980 μL of distilled water and then, 200 μL Bradford reagent was added to each sample. A low HBA score suggests a low proportion of mature sperm, while a higher HBA score shows the normal presence of healthy, mature sperm. Each swimming training session lasted for 25 min, and all training sessions were performed in the mornings. During the study, all efforts were made to minimize the stress factors for the animals. Can swimming actually increase testosterone in some cases? However, the lower impact of swimming compared to running might offer a slight advantage in mitigating hormonal stress. The impact on testosterone is likely similar in that all chronic endurance activities can potentially lead to a decrease if not managed properly with nutrition and recovery. What specifically about intense swimming could potentially lower testosterone? Some studies suggest that prolonged, intense swimming, particularly without adequate nutrition and recovery, may lead to a temporary decrease in testosterone.
